From as early as December, the migration starts to move into these Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The short grass plains provide the best nutrition which provides the greens where the birth of calves is expected to occur en masse. Mid-February is calving season when approximately 800,000 babies are born every day with a terrain of approximately 20,000 square kilometers of the Ndutu Lake Ndutu and Masek area of short grass plains as the place to be during this experience. About 400,000 zebra and 200,000 gazelles accompany the wildebeest and they are making a total of over 2 million migrating animals in the plains of Ngorongoro and the Serengeti National Park.

Congenial Safari Activities

  • The Great Migration
We offer you a unique safari experience to witness the world-famous wildebeest migration. The great Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti’s wildebeest accompanied by large numbers of zebras and smaller numbers of the Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, and impala. These animals move in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. They migrate throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing land and better-quality water. The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

Travel Tips

Weather Seasons & Climate
It is possible to travel to Tanzania all year-round. Temperatures range between 20 to 35 degrees Celsius. There are two rainy seasons that punctuate the calendar year the heavy rains season from the end of March to mid-May and the short rains period in November. How the broad weather pattern works in relation to the great migration is of particular interest to most of our guests. Hence, is a summary:

  • December to March
During this time of the year, the wildebeest are in the southern area of the Serengeti more in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and it is calving season at Ndutu. During this period the migration is “in between” the locations. As such, these months are
  • April to June
slightly transitional times for seeing the herds, which can be found in the central and western parts of the Serengeti.
  • July to October
During these months the wildebeest are in the northern Serengeti plains, and you have a chance of seeing thousands of herds crossing the great Mara River.
  • November
During this month in a ‘normal year’ the short rains have begun — propelling the wildebeest to leave the now denuded grasslands of the Maasai Mara and head back to the rejuvenated Serengeti.
